You might have gone shopping with your child for a small present and noticed they picked a Robux card instead of traditional toys or craft supplies. Robux is the in-game currency for Roblox, which can be used to buy digital items, including loot boxes in some games.
A loot box is a virtual item that players can purchase or earn using real money or in-game currency within a video game. When opened, these boxes provide a random mix of digital rewards. These rewards may include simple items, such as character outfits or skins, or more valuable items such as special equipment, tools, or upgrades that significantly impact gameplay.
Loot boxes resemble gambling, as they create a reward system where players essentially place a bet for a chance to receive something beneficial in the game. This sense of excitement can increase the risk of developing gambling problemsamong young people due to similarities, such as paying money for chance-based rewards, experiencing random outcomes, and receiving variable rewards similar to slot machines.
Studies by Wardle and Zendle (2021) indicate that young people who use their own money to buy loot boxes have a significantly higher chance of facing gambling-related issues. Even after accounting for factors like age, impulsivity, and socioeconomic background, the link between loot boxes and problem gambling remained strong.
Young people are especially vulnerable to these risks because their brains are still developing, and engaging with such reward systems is unhealthy. Children may find themselves trapped in a cycle of impulsive and risk-taking behaviors. The gaming environment itself can add pressure, making kids feel like they need to buy loot boxes just to keep up with friends or fit in.
Parents and caregivers can support kids by talking openly with them about these purchases and putting limits on how much they can spend on games. Setting clear expectations around gaming time and encouraging kids to try other hobbies can help create a healthier balance.
