Summer Alcohol Safety: Keep You and Your Loved Ones Safe from Alcohol-Related Harm

June 29, 2023

When we think of summertime fun, we often see images of pool parties, family reunions, days at the lake, and any other activities that involve spending time outside. For many, having a drink or two goes along well with the season’s celebrations. When consumed responsibly and in moderation, alcohol can be conducive to living a healthy lifestyle. However, excessive alcohol consumption, especially during the summer months, can lead to serious injury and death.

To help eliminate these risks this summer, follow these steps for responsible alcohol consumption:

Alcohol and High Temperatures

Enjoying the great outdoors is synonymous with summertime fun, but alcohol consumption does not do the human body any favors in terms of preventing dehydration and heat stroke. Additionally, impaired judgment may make it more difficult to respond to dangerous situations. In cases where you or someone you know is experiencing the signs of heat exhaustion, offer cool nonalcoholic beverages. And if you plan to be out in high temperatures for long periods of time, it’s best to avoid alcohol altogether.

Fireworks Safety

In the state of Iowa, it is legal to use consumer fireworks during the Fourth of July Holiday, but that does not mean they are at all safe to use. Each year, thousands of injuries and deaths are attributed to at-home fireworks usage, with many of those injuries occurring in children and young adults. It’s best to leave fireworks usage to the professionals, but if you do choose to light fireworks at home, absolutely never use them while under the influence of alcohol. Don’t be the reason your family has to take a trip to the hospital.

Boating and Alcohol Consumption

Drinking and driving is a recipe for disaster, including trips on the water. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, it is illegal to operate a boat of any kind while under the influence of alcohol at a level of .08 BAC or higher. It is truly in your best interest to avoid alcohol consumption while on the water, seeing as the US Coast Guard reported alcohol to be the leading cause of boating-related deaths.

If you plan on enjoying a beverage on your boat, it is important to remember that alcohol reduces reaction time and your ability to make proper decisions in an emergency situation. It is highly recommended that you designate a sober driver, as boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol can land you hefty fines and jail time.

Prime for Life

In the case that you have been arrested for drinking and driving in Iowa, it is required that you complete a 12-hour Drinking and Driving Course. The Prime for Life course combines lectures, discussions, assignments, and audio-visual materials in a positive environment that assists participants in analyzing their drinking patterns. This course is offered by CADS Inc. on Saturdays and Sundays at the East Locust Facility. For more information on this program or other treatment services, head over to the links below.
