Young adults deal with constant life changes from graduating high school to attending college and joining the workforce. Constant change can lead to a range of emotions, including stress and anxiety.
5.1 million young adults reported having a substance use disorder and 87% of those went untreated.
To help prevent substance abuse in young adults, education on the subject should start at a young age, from both educators and parents. Parental education can make a child feel more comfortable with using a parent as a resource and coming to them when a problem occurs.
Other tips for parents include:
Work with your kids to identify healthy ways to manage stress
Examples: sleeping more, spending time outdoors, one-on-one time, etc.
Model healthy coping skills
Examples: exercise, mindfulness or meditation
Offer empathy and compassion, acknowledge that people struggle sometimes
Remind your kid(s) that it is important to you that they are happy, healthy and safe
Reassure them that if they are suffering, it’s okay to seek out help
