The Quad-Cities community is making important strides to combat youth substance use in our area. The Quad Cities Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, or QCSAPC, is a coalition dedicated to creating a safe, healthy, and substance abuse-free community for the greater Quad Cities. Meeting every third Wednesday of the month from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the organization provides substance use education through collaborative partnerships to engage and strengthen our community.
Though studies have shown a decline in youth substance use, progress has been slowing in the areas of vaping and prescription opioids. A report from the CDC states, “In 2021, 23% of high school students consumed alcohol, with almost 11% of high school students engaging in binge drinking. Tobacco use remains common, with about 19 of every 100 high school students (18.7%) reporting current use of a tobacco product, mainly driven by electronic vapor products. Approximately 16% reported current marijuana use and 6% reported current prescription opioid misuse.”
While these statistics seem discouraging, coalitions like the one we have right here in the Quad Cities are making a major difference in the lives of youth who may be struggling with a substance abuse issue.
The Drug-Free Communities Program provides funding to over 700 coalitions fighting youth substance abuse nationwide. Since its establishment, the DFC Program has seen a significant and positive impact across the United States due to the work of coalitions like the QCSAPC. In 2022, participating DFC coalitions reported a decline in substance use among adolescents in their communities and successfully engaged a larger number of young people to not use substances.
Though progress is being made, the work has only just begun. If you’re looking to make a difference and be more active in your community, now is the time to step up. Joining the QCSAPC means joining a group of like-minded community members with shared interests working together to make the Quad Cities a safer, stronger, and healthier place for all. Join the coalition for their next meeting on May 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the CADS Outreach Center on 1519 E. Locust Street in Davenport. If you’re interested in joining and want to learn more, contact the CADS Prevention Department at (563) 326-4116 (Press 4 for Prevention), or email the QCSAPC to receive additional information.
