Did you know a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet? This easy access can lead to drug poisoning and overdose deaths, particularly due to opioids, affecting many people and communities across the United States. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is committed to ensuring the health and safety of American communities by enforcing controlled substance laws. Twice a year, the DEA hosts National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, providing an opportunity for individuals to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a way to prevent misuse and opioid addiction down the road.
Why Safe Disposal is Crucial
Many people hold onto leftover medications just in case they might need them later. However, this practice creates unnecessary risks. Keeping expired or unneeded prescriptions can lead to:
By participating in Take Back Day, you can ensure that these medications are disposed of safely and responsibly.
How to Get Involved in Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
Getting involved is simple. On April 26, 2025, the DEA will establish secure collection sites where you can drop off unused medications between 10 AM and 2 PM. To get started, find a collection site near you by using the DEA’s Collection Site Locator. Most prescription pills and liquid medications are accepted, but be sure to check the details for your local site. Just bring your medications to the designated location and dispose of them properly in the collection bin.
Take Action for a Safer Community
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a vital initiative that helps prevent drug misuse, protect the environment, and keep our communities safe. By responsibly discarding medications, we can reduce the risk of substance misuse and overdose while promoting a healthier future. Take action now by cleaning out your medicine cabinet and participating in Take Back Day on April 26. Together, we can make a difference, and if you miss the event, remember that year-round drop-off locations are always available.
