October 10, 2023

The month of October brings many opportunities to come together for the prevention of substance abuse. October is National Substance Use Prevention Month – a time dedicated to highlighting the struggles related to substance abuse and the people it affects every day.

Keep reading to learn more about this annual campaign and how you can get involved with substance use prevention this year.

National Prevention Month – October 2023

In 2011, the month of October was declared as National Substance Use Prevention Month. In the following years, the month has been a time for people to come together for the prevention of substance abuse and honor those who have been successful in the recovery process. Additionally, this month gives the opportunity to salute the family, friends, and community members who work diligently to support their journeys.

In a study from SAMHSA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), they found that seven out of ten American adults with a substance use disorder consider themselves to be recovering or in recovery (2023), highlighting the importance of prevention campaigns in the US.

If you’re looking for ways to get involved, the team at CADS has compiled a list of things you can do this month:

  • Host or attend a community event.
    • Join your neighbors in the fight against substance abuse. Raise awareness by going to fairs, meetings, assemblies, or block parties.
  • Post on social media.
    • There’s no better way to get the word out than by going social! If you are currently in recovery, share your story to help the next person. If you are a supporter of the cause, spread the word! Use the #MyPreventionStory or #PreventionMonth tags to spread your message.
  • Participate in Red Ribbon Week
  • Find ways to help local organizations.
    • Assist in your local non-profit’s mission to prevent substance abuse. Contact your organization to find ways to volunteer or donate today.

When we work together to prevent substance use, we create a cleaner and happier environment for all of us. Happy National Prevention Month!
