Kratom: What You Should Know About This Growing Herbal Product

September 4, 2026

Kratom has become a topic of growing conversation in communities across the country. While it is often marketed as a natural or herbal product, there are still important questions surrounding its effects, potential risks, and how some of these products are being sold.

A recent episode of The Journal, titled “This Opioid Alternative Is Fueling an Addiction Crisis,” explored the growing popularity of kratom and the debate surrounding its use. The episode looked at why some people turn to kratom, concerns from health professionals and families, and the challenges surrounding regulation and research.

Kratom comes from the leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia. It is available in several forms, including powders, capsules, gummies, drinks, and other products. People may use it for reasons such as pain relief, energy, or as an alternative to other substances.

One of the concerns discussed in the podcast is that kratom can affect the same areas of the brain involved with opioid activity. This means the effects can be more complicated than the word “natural” might suggest.

The episode also discussed newer and more concentrated kratom-related products, including products containing 7-OH. These products can be much more potent than traditional kratom leaf products, creating additional concerns about how they affect the body and how they are being marketed to consumers.

Another important point from the discussion is how much researchers still have to learn. Questions remain about appropriate amounts, long-term effects, interactions with medications, and what happens when kratom is combined with other substances.

The podcast also shared the story of a family who lost their daughter and later learned that kratom was involved in her death. Her story illustrates why it is important for consumers and families to understand what products contain and to take concerns about substance use seriously.
