How Fathers and Trusted Adults Help Young People Build Healthy Futures

June 9, 2026

As Father's Day approaches, it is a good time to recognize the important role that fathers, father figures, mentors, coaches, and other trusted adults play in the lives of young people.

Young people are often shaped more by the examples they observe than by the words they hear. The way adults respond to stress, handle challenges, and navigate everyday situations can play a significant role in how young people learn to respond to similar experiences.

Positive role models can help young people develop confidence, resilience, and healthy decision-making skills. Something as simple as having regular conversations, showing interest in their activities, or creating a safe space to ask questions can make a meaningful difference.

Supportive relationships with trusted adults can help young people better manage peer pressure, outside influences, and other challenges that may impact their well-being. When youth feel supported and understood, they are often better equipped to make healthy choices.

CADS partners with schools and community organizations through Prevention Services, Project TND, and Too Good for Drugs to help youth build confidence, improve decision-making skills, and develop protective factors that support long-term well-being.

This Father's Day, remember that positive influence does not require perfection. Showing up, listening, and being present can leave a lasting impact that extends far beyond a single conversation.
