From Stress to Success: Supporting Student Well-Being and Preventing Substance Use

August 18, 2025

Beginning a new school year brings both enthusiasm and a variety of hurdles for students to navigate. Students look forward to making new friends, joining clubs, and having new experiences. Yet, alongside this excitement, many students face significant pressures and stress. Without effective ways to handle these challenges, some students may turn to unhealthy coping methods, including substance use.

At CADS (Center for Alcohol & Drug Services), we understand these struggles firsthand. Serving youth and families throughout Iowa and Illinois, CADS is dedicated to providing compassionate substance use preventionand mental health support tailored to the needs of our community’s young people.

Recognizing the Signs of Back-to-School Stress

Stress can impact students emotionally, physically, and behaviorally. It’s important for parents, teachers, and peers to notice early signs of stress so they can provide the necessary support. Some of the most common signs include irritability, trouble sleeping, and avoiding school altogether.

Building Healthy Habits for Long-Term Well-Being

CADS encourages families and schools to promote habits like:

  • Stay active: Walking, playing sports, or doing yoga can help reduce stress and improve mood.
  • Create steady routines: Set regular times for meals, rest, and studying.
  • Engage in creative outlets: Music, art, or writing can help students express themselves and process emotions in a safe way.
  • Practice mindfulness: Breathing exercises, meditation, or journaling can help manage anxiety.
  • Build support networks: Connect with friends, family, and trusted adults who can offer encouragement.

Why Preventing Unhealthy Coping Behaviors Matters

Since the teen brain is still developing, substance use during this stage can disrupt growth and decision-making, often leading to struggles in school and higher dropout rates.

According to research from Drug Abuse Statistics, drug use among middle school students, particularly 8th graders, rose significantly from 2016 to 2020. This shows the urgent need for early education, prevention, and accessible support.
