Drink Responsibly This Summer

July 6, 2022

Summer is usually a time full of fun with friends and family—and for many of us that may involve drinking and enjoying the warm weather. However, that is all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

“Up to 70% of water recreation deaths of teens and adults involve the use of alcohol.” ~ National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

Be aware of the dangers of risky drinking during these summer activities to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Swimming

Whether you are swimming in your backyard pool, a lake or the ocean, swimming while inebriated can be extremely dangerous. Alcohol impairs judgment and leads to risky—and potentially dangerous—activity. Even experienced swimmers may venture too far from safety and not notice they are developing hypothermia or possibly drowning due to intoxication.

Boating

We’ve all heard of the dangers of drunk driving; but did you know that alcohol contributes to nearly 18% of fatal boating accidents? Alcohol can impair a boater’s senses, resulting in poor judgment, lack of balance, blurry vision and delayed reaction times. Be sure also to have a designated boater to ensure everyone can enjoy the day safely on the water.

Driving

Unfortunately, drinking and driving is always a hazard regardless of the season. Be sure you understand the dangers of drunk driving

Dehydration

Dehydration is a high risk during the hotter seasons. Alcohol can increase this risk due to more frequent urination and the inability to recognize the signs of a potential heat stroke.
