Safe Summer Driving: Center For Alcohol & Drug Services, Inc.’s Drinking & Driving School

July 3, 2018

From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend and everything in between, summertime offers plenty of opportunities for people to socialize and spend more time outside. As a result, the summer months tend to see a substantial increase in both alcohol-involved crashes and Operating While Intoxicated charges.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 1.5 million people are arrested each year for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. That means one out of every 121 licensed drivers were arrested for drunk driving.

Iowa law stipulates that individuals, found to have been operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated - either by failing a sobriety test or refusing to test, must complete a mandated "drinking and driving course that encourages the offender to assess the offender's own drinking and driving behavior in order to select practical alternatives."

This educational program, designed by the Prevention Research Institute, is offered to all OWI offenders at various locations across the state including the Center for Alcohol & Drug Services, Inc. The class combines lecture, discussion, assignments and audiovisual materials to help participants take a deeper look at their drinking patterns, especially when it comes to their decision to drink and drive.

The Center for Alcohol & Drug Services, Inc. offers the course during the following times:

Saturdays 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Fairmount Facility - Sunday 8:00 a.m. - Noon
